This service includes the processing of metal and non-metal salvage, recyclables, and products into secondary raw materials, normally using a mechanical or chemical transformation process. These activities also include materials recovery from waste flows by: 1. Sorting of recyclable fractions from flows of non-hazardous waste (i.e. from garbage); or 2. sorting of mixed recyclable fractions (e.g. paper, plastics, empty beverage cans, and metals) into certain categories.
Examples of the mechanical or chemical processing methods used for the production of secondary raw materials:

  • Mechanical crushing of scrap metal from used motor vehicles, washers, bicycles, etc.
  • Compressing of large metal parts and/or products such as railway cars
  • Shredding of metal salvage, vehicle wrecks, etc.
  • Other mechanical treatment methods such as cutting or pressing for volume reduction
  • Recovery of metals from photographic waste such as fixatives, films, and photographic paper
  • Recovery of rubber, e.g. from used tires, for the production of secondary raw materials
  • Sorting and pressing of plastics for the production of secondary raw materials, for the manufacture of pipes, flower pots, pallets, and the like
  • Processing (cleaning, melting, milling) of plastic or rubber waste into granulates
  • Crushing, cleaning and sorting of glass
  • Crushing, cleaning, and sorting of other salvage and recyclables, e.g. demolition rubble, for the production of secondary raw materials
  • Processing of used edible oils and fats into secondary raw materials
  • Processing of other waste and recyclables from foods, beverages, and tobacco into secondary raw materials

This service does not include:

  • Manufacture of new end products from (in-house made or not in-house made) secondary raw materials, e.g. spinning of yarns from recycled fibers, production of paperpulp from waste paper, retreading and rebuilding of tires, or the production of metal from scrap metal (see Sections 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33 – manufacturing industry)
  • Recycling of nuclear fuels (see 20.13.0)
  • Melting-down of scrap iron (see 24.10.0)
  • Production of silver from film waste (see 24.41.0)
  • Material recovery from incineration or heat treatment (see Group 38.2)
  • Treatment and disposal of non-hazardous waste (see 38.21.0)
  • Pre-treatment of organic waste for disposal purposes, including the production of compost (see 38.21.0)
  • Energy generation through incineration of non-hazardous waste (see 38.21.0)
  • Treatment and disposal of hazardous waste (see 38.22.0)
  • Environmentally compatible disposal of junk goods like refrigerators (see 38.22.0)
  • Treatment and disposal of low-level radioactive waste from hospitals, etc. (see 38.22.0)
  • Treatment and disposal of toxic, contaminated waste (see 38.22.0)
  • Stripping-down of motor vehicles, ships, computers, televisions, and other devices for the recovery of resalable single components (see Sections 45, 46 and 47)
  • Wholesale of salvage and recyclables (see 46.77.0)
