Professions and training courses
Professional recognition is helpful in many professions. In some professions it is even a prerequisite for practising the profession in Germany. That depends on the profession:
In the regulated professions, you need a recognition of your professional qualifications in order to exercise the profession or use the professional title. Without recognition, you are not allowed to work in Germany in these professions with your professional qualification obtained abroad. Examples of professions regulated in Germany are doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher, educator and engineer. A list of all the professions that are regulated in Germany can be found on the "Regulated professions database" website.
In non-regulated professions, recognition is not a mandatory requirement for practising the profession. In these professions you can apply and work directly on the job market. However, an assessment of your qualification can be helpful to help employers and companies understand your foreign qualification. In addition, a qualification recognised as equivalent also opens up access to further training courses. All so-called training professions, i.e. professions that are trained in the dual system, are not regulated in Germany.
Common to all professions is that a recognition of foreign qualifications facilitates work in Bavaria. First of all, it is crucial that you clarify which German reference profession you choose. The starting point for all recognition procedures is always the German profession and not the profession in your home country. The training and professions in Bavaria and in the home country can be very different. A call to the hotline "Working and living in Germany“ +49 30-1815-1111 could help you. The hotline is available in German and English.
