Interpreters and translators at public authorities and courts; request for temporary registration in the database of interpreters and translators by EU citizens

Interpreters and translators working only temporarily in Germany can apply for registration in the Interpreter and Translator Database.

Description

The Interpreter and Translator Database forms the basis for courts and authorities when searching for interpreter and translation services.

Interpreters and translators who are citizens of a state of the European Union or the EEA can be publicly appointed and sworn in under the same conditions as German citizens. In particular, this requires passing the relevant state or state-recognized examination in Germany or recognition of the relevant foreign qualification as equivalent.

Interpreters and translators who are established in another EU or EEA member state and who wish to work in Germany only temporarily can also be entered in the database under the conditions listed below.

Prerequisites

Interpreters and translators working only temporarily in Germany are entered in the database of interpreters and translators pursuant to Art. 63 AGGVG if they are legally established in another EU or EEA member state for the purpose of exercising such activity.

They will also be registered if they prove that they have exercised an activity as a court or official interpreter in their country of establishment for at least one year during the previous ten years. This proof must be provided to the President of the Munich I Regional Court.

The registration in the database expires after twelve months if it is not applied for again.
