Grape varieties; application for classification
For each administrative unit in the European Union where viticulture is practiced, a grape variety classification must be made. Only the grape varieties included in this list may be grown for wine production.
Description
In Bavaria, classification is carried out uniformly for all growing regions. In principle, all grape varieties mentioned in the respective valid list for the variety register of the Bundessortenamt are considered classified for Bavaria. For grape varieties that are not yet registered in the Federal List of Varieties, the classification for the production of quality wine for Bavaria can be applied for separately. The Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture examines the application and obtains a statement from the Franconian Winegrowers' Association. If the classification is approved, this decision is submitted to the Ministry for further legal enforcement. Currently, 113 varieties are classified for the Bavarian wine-growing regions.
Prerequisites
The applicant must prove that the grape variety is suitable for cultivation in Bavaria by submitting multi-year trial results.
