Assisted training; Apply for support

You and your training company can receive support so that you can successfully start or complete your training or introductory qualification.


The assisted training can accompany you on the way to finding and taking up a suitable training position up to the successful completion of your in-company vocational training.

The assisted training supports you if, for example, poor grades or problems in the training company, in the vocational school or in the parental home endanger the start of your training or the success of your training.

You can also receive support from Assisted Training when completing an introductory qualification.

A training provider with experienced teachers, social pedagogues and a training companion will develop an individual support plan with you.

Depending on your individual needs, you can receive support for a limited period of time, but also during the entire training/entry qualification.

During the entire period of participation, a training mentor will be available to you as a permanent contact person.

If you are carrying out your in-company vocational training or entry qualification on a part-time basis, you can receive the same support during the accompanying phase of assisted training.

As a young person with disabilities, you can also take part in assisted training if your individual support needs can be covered and participation in working life is achieved.

Your training company can also be supported within the framework of assisted training in order to lead your training or your introductory qualification to success.

The assisted training is divided into 2 phases.

Preliminary phase (optional)

This phase supports you in your search for and acceptance of an in-company training position. Contents can be for example:

  • Internships,
  • if necessary also vocational orientation,
  • job application training,
  • strengthening of motivation or
  • to a limited extent, the reduction of language and educational deficits.

Your participation takes place full-time (39 teaching hours per week) and generally lasts 6 months. If you are unable to find an in-company training position during this time, your participation can be extended by a further 2 months.

If you have not found a training place by the end of the possibly extended preliminary phase, your support in the assisted training also ends.

If you have signed an in-company training contract or a contract for the implementation of an introductory qualification, you can participate in the accompanying phase of assisted training at any time if you need further support.

During participation in the preliminary phase, you can receive vocational training allowance.

As a training company, you can get to know your future trainee during the preliminary phase, for example through a work placement, and also receive further support from the training provider. This can be, for example

  • Information to and support of the trainers in the company for the preparation of the training.
  • Support in the preparation of written application documents in the context of an application for funding by the training company.

Accompanying phase

In the accompanying phase you can be supported

  • by helping you to overcome language and learning difficulties
  • in the advancement of specialist theoretical skills, knowledge and abilities
  • with measures that help you to successfully complete the training or introductory qualification and not to drop out, and
  • preparing you for the transition to a job that is subject to compulsory insurance as soon as you have completed your training, and
  • in stabilising or finding employment after you have successfully completed your training.

Your support will be coordinated with the training company and will go beyond the teaching of standard company and training content. In this way, you receive exactly the support that fits your needs and the needs of your training company.

The number of hours per week for the exchange and teaching offer will be individually adapted to your needs. These generally take place outside of the company's training time.

The duration of your support is based on your individual needs. This can be the case for the entire duration of your training or your introductory qualification, or only temporarily, for example in preparation for the intermediate or final examination.

The previous offers of training-accompanying assistance (abH) such as

  • Tutoring for lessons at the vocational school,
  • tutoring in language classes,
  • preparation for class tests and exams,
  • Mediating talks between trainers, teachers and/or parents,
  • Social pedagogical support or
  • Support with personal problems that have/have an impact on the training/entry qualification,

are still available, now within the framework of assisted training.

The Assisted Training can be suspended for a maximum of 6 months if you temporarily have no need for support. If no further support is required at the end of the 6 months, the Assisted Training will be terminated.

Follow-up support is also available for up to 6 months after you have completed your training if you have found a job. If it did not work out with taking up a job, the Assisted Training can still support you in finding a job up to 1 year after the end of the vocational training.

If you incur travel costs as part of the Assisted Training, you must pay these yourself. The Employment Agency or the Job Centre will not reimburse these costs.

As a training company, you will receive the following during the accompanying phase

  • the necessary assistance in the administration, organisation and implementation of the training/entry qualification of the assisted trainee/participant in an entry qualification as well as
  • support in the day-to-day running of the company in order to stabilise the training relationship/entry qualification.

Regular discussions with your trainees/participants in an introductory qualification and other parties involved in your company help to identify possible difficulties at an early stage and to develop solutions.

To this end, you provide the training provider with a written declaration that you will enable your trainees or your participants in an introductory qualification to take part in the individual support services within the framework of assisted training.


You can participate in assisted training under the following conditions:

  • You are basically without initial vocational training.
  • You have the training maturity and already have ideas regarding your career choice.
  • You have completed compulsory full-time schooling.
  • You may, for reasons relating to your person
    • you cannot start, continue or successfully complete vocational training in a company without participating in assisted training, or
    • do not establish or consolidate an employment relationship after completing a vocational training course supported by Assisted Training, or
  • They require additional support during an introductory training course due to personal reasons.

Preliminary phase: Special requirements for foreigners:

  • They are aiming for in-company vocational training.
  • Access to the training or labour market is open to you. If you are not allowed to work in Germany, you cannot receive the support.
  • You can be sponsored if you are allowed to train or work, but also if the foreigners authority can allow you to work. The permit itself is not yet required for participation in the preliminary phase.
  • If you are permitted or tolerated in Germany, you must also have a legal residence in Germany of at least 15 months. If you entered before August 1, 2019, a shortened period of at least 3 months applies.
  • If you are permitted in Germany, you cannot receive vocational training assistance. Under certain conditions, you can receive benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act.

Special requirements and exclusion criteria for your participation in the accompanying phase:

  • Before entering the accompanying phase, you must have signed a training agreement/contract for the implementation of an introductory qualification.
  • Assisted training can be used to support in-company vocational training if it takes place in a
    • a state-recognised training occupation in accordance with the Vocational Training Act, the Crafts Code or the Maritime Labour Act, or
    • is carried out in accordance with Part 2, also in conjunction with Part 5, of the Nursing Professions Act or the Geriatric Care Act
    • and the vocational training contract prescribed for this has been concluded.
  • In the case of school-based training, you cannot be supported with Assisted Training.
  • There are no restrictions with regard to nationality, residence status and previous residence time for your participation as a foreigner in the assisted phase after taking up in-company vocational training.
  • To take up in-company vocational training, you as a foreigner should generally have language level B2 (cf. Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)).


You can take part in an assisted training measure after a personal interview at the employment agency or the job centre, if you meet the eligibility requirements, if there is a corresponding measure in your region and if there is a free place. If a personal interview is not possible, your request can also be discussed by telephone.

  • Contact your local employment agency or - if you are receiving basic benefits for jobseekers - your local job centre and arrange an appointment.
  • At this meeting, present the documents and evidence that prove your need for support.
  • Together, you will discuss your need for support and any questions that arise from your documents.
  • The employment agency or the job centre will check whether you meet the requirements for participation on the basis of the available information and will inform you of the result.
  • If participation is intended for you, the vocational counsellor of the Employment Agency or the integration specialist of the Job Centre will name the training provider offering assisted training and discuss the further procedure with you.

If you are a company that provides training or would like to provide training, please contact the Employer Hotline of the Employment Agency or the Employment Agency responsible for your place of work. If the Jobcenter is responsible for supporting your trainee, their responsibility depends on the trainee's residential address.


You do not have to observe any deadlines.

Processing time

If your career counsellor cannot immediately determine during the counselling interview whether you can take part in the assisted training, ask how long the clarification will take. In principle, the processing does not take longer than 3 weeks.
