Vehicle register; request for owner information
Information can be provided from the vehicle register (owner information) if there is a need to pursue legal claims for traffic-related reasons.
Description
In order to enforce or defend legal claims in connection with participation in road traffic (e.g. after a traffic accident), the registration authority can provide information about the owner and/or the liability insurance of a vehicle.
Applications for information from the vehicle register can be made by private individuals, lawyers or public bodies. For reasons of data protection, the request must be made in writing, stating the reasons for the request (including the relevant license plate number or vehicle identification number), or in person.
The registration authority administering the license plate is responsible for providing the information.
If you wish to make a claim for accident damage and only require information on the motor vehicle liability insurance, you also have the option of obtaining free information from GDV Dienstleistungs-GmbH & Co. KG (for link, see "Further links").
