Wine law; application for a quality test for wines

Certain wine products (e.g. quality wines) may only be offered for sale if they have passed the quality test for wines ("Wein-TÜV"). They require an Official Test Number (A.P.No.).



The product must comply with the legal requirements in terms of composition (ingredients), presentation (e.g. Bocksbeutel) and designation (e.g. flavor information) and comply with the prescribed maximum and minimum values (e.g. total sulfur content, must weights). In addition, the product must be free of defects and typical of the origin, grape variety and predicate grade.


The application for an official examination number must be submitted to the Government of Lower Franconia. All wines that are to be marketed as quality or Prädikat wines are tested, furthermore all sparkling wines b. A., quality sparkling wines b. A. and quality liqueur wines psr. A. This applies to the products from the growing regions Franconia, as well as Württemberg-area Bayer. Lake Constance.

Applications are to be made exclusively online, with the exception of sparkling wines psr. A., for which application forms in paper form are currently still required (available at the wine inspection office).

In the case of online applications, the data for the official quality inspection for wines is plausibility checked via the Internet and sent to the wine inspection body in encrypted form. This enables a short processing time, as the data can be transferred into the testing procedure at the testing office without having to enter the data again. The winegrowers, on the other hand, receive advance information in electronic form directly after the inspection, which saves time in marketing and sales.

The electronic procedure is as follows:

  • Applicants enter their data for the quality inspection via the web-based WeinOnline form and send their data to the wine inspection body.
  • The application must be printed out by the applicant and signed in paper form and still submitted with the wines to be tested, since for legal reasons the handwritten signature on the application is required.
  • At the wine testing center, the data can be clearly identified and accepted by means of a transaction number.
  • Immediately after the issuance of the notice, the applicants usually receive a preliminary information by e-mail to the deposited e-mail address.

  • 4 sample bottles for Prädikat wines or if an official test report is required (e.g. for sparkling wine psr)

    The application for quality inspection can be submitted online to the wine inspection body. The completed form can be saved in PDF format and then printed out. The application must be submitted in paper form with the wines to be tested, as for legal reasons a handwritten signature is required on the application.


    • Basic fee: 16 Euro plus
      Volume fee: 3 Euro per 1000 liters or part thereof, from 30 001 liters increase fee 1.50 Euro per 1000 liters or part thereof;
    • Expenses for the official examination report: 41 Euro
    • Expenses for the examination of sparkling wine including the sensory test: 47 euros plus quantity fee.
