Storm warning service on Bavarian lakes; organization

On larger Bavarian lakes, water sports enthusiasts are warned of strong winds and storms with visual warning signals or by other means.

Description

As a water sports enthusiast, you will be warned of strong winds and storms with visual warning signals or by other means on the following Bavarian lakes:

  • Lake Ammersee, Lake Starnberg and Lake Wörthsee
  • Staffelsee, Riegsee and Walchensee
  • Lake Tegernsee, Lake Schliersee and Lake Simssee
  • Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger-Tachinger
  • Lake Forggensee
  • Lake Altmühl, Lake Igelsbach, Lake Kleiner Brombach, Lake Großer Brombach and Lake Roth

This is usually done by storm warning lights.

For the strong wind warning, warning signals are given by orange flashing light with 40 flashes per minute; it takes place at a wind force of 6 and 7 Beaufort. The strong wind warning is intended to make water sports enthusiasts aware of the danger and to prompt them to carefully monitor the weather development and adjust their behavior accordingly.

The storm warning, which is issued when the wind force exceeds 8 Beaufort, is made by lighting orange flashing lights at 90 flashes per minute. The storm warning is intended to prompt water sports enthusiasts to immediately take all precautionary measures and to seek the shore or places sheltered from the wind. In addition, radio announcements are initiated during storm warnings.

The storm warning service is characterized by the interaction of various authorities and agencies. In particular, the responsible safety authority, the police, the German Weather Service (Regional Weather Consulting Munich) and the Integrated Control Centers are involved; in addition, storm warning commissions can be formed.

The storm warning service is a task of the safety authorities, i.e. the competent district administrative authority or the municipality if a lake is located exclusively on its territory.

The competent county administrative authorities and municipalities shall provide for the organization of the storm warning service, in particular, they shall provide and maintain the necessary storm warning facilities.

In addition, the safety authorities shall also establish storm warning commissions consisting of persons who observe the weather development on site on their behalf and who are available as contact persons for the German Weather Service, Regional Weather Consultancy Munich.

The German Meteorological Service, Munich Regional Meteorological Office, is responsible for issuing storm warnings and giving the all-clear. He

  • initiates the issuing of high wind and storm warnings as well as their all-clear by the responsible Integrated Control Centers (ILS),
  • arranges for radio announcements in the event of storm warnings,
  • informs the operations centers of the police headquarters,
  • informs the safety authorities/storm warning commissions.

The Integrated Control Center triggers the storm warning devices (high wind or storm warning) after receiving the warning from the German Weather Service. After the all-clear has been given by the German Weather Service, the Integrated Control Center terminates the high wind or storm warning.

The police support the safety authorities in fulfilling their tasks. In boat operations, it particularly issues messages to the German Weather Service, Regional Weather Advisory Munich, about changing weather conditions and monitors the operation of the storm warning lights.

Deadlines

The storm warning service is generally operated from April 1 to October 31 from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. Deviating from this, the storm warning service at Walchensee already starts on 01 March and at Forggensee only on 01 May.
