Work opportunity; request for assignment

If you are receiving unemployment benefit II and would like to improve your employability, you can be assigned to a work opportunity by the job center.

Have you been unemployed for a long time, possibly with limited health, and would like to regain your footing in the job market? As a recipient of unemployment benefit II, a work opportunity gives you the opportunity to perform an activity that prepares you for employment on the labor market.

The activities to be performed must be additional, non-competitive and in the public interest.

A work opportunity can only be considered if your integration into the labor market cannot be achieved with other benefits. As a rule, a work opportunity lasts up to 24 months. It can be extended by up to 12 months.

Work opportunities are carried out by a suitable institution. This can be, for example, an educational institution, a charitable company or a non-profit association.

The working hours are determined by the job center on a case-by-case basis.

Your contact person at the job center will assign you a work opportunity. In addition to your unemployment benefit II, you will receive additional compensation, for example, for additional travel costs or work clothes. The amount of the additional expenses allowance is based on the actual expenses incurred as a result of participation in the work opportunity. You will only receive the additional expenses allowance for hours in which you actually performed activities, i.e. not for sick leave, vacation days, weekends and vacations.

You are insured against accidents through your measure provider.

If you receive benefits in kind from your measure provider from your own funds, such as a monthly bus and train ticket, your additional expenses allowance will be reduced accordingly. If you receive additional cash benefits from the measure provider, these will be considered as income and offset against your unemployment benefit II.

The costs required for the implementation of the work opportunities will be reimbursed to your measure provider.

The decision about a work opportunity is at the discretion of your job center. You do not have a legal claim to this support.

  • You can be assigned to a work opportunity if
    • this benefit is necessary for your integration into work and no other benefit can be considered for you to bring you closer to the labor market, and
    • you have not been assigned to work opportunities for more than 24 months within the last 5 years.
  • The work opportunity must
    • be additional, which means that the work to be performed would not be performed without the support, would not be performed to this extent or would only be performed at a later date.
    • be in the public interest. In other words, your work must serve the general public, not commercial interests or a limited group of people.
    • be non-competitive, i.e. it must not displace or prevent regular employment.

You will receive a job opportunity from your contact person at the Job Center.

  • Your contact person will explain the type, scope and duration of the work and tell you who you will be working for. Your concerns will also be taken into account.
  • The details of the work opportunity will also be communicated to you in writing.
  • Feedback on the assignment can also be provided online.
