Motor vehicle registration plates; application for a classic car registration plate
Historic motor vehicles are finding more and more friends. But how do you get the beloved classic cars on the road? It depends on the intended use and the number of vehicles how this should be done.
A motor vehicle which first came into circulation thirty years ago and which is suitable for making a contribution to the maintenance of the motor vehicle cultural heritage may be driven (exclusively) for the purpose of participating in such events in accordance with the provisions of § 17 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV) with a red registration plate.
It is also possible to carry out test drives and transfer drives. The licence plates are also allocated for use on different vehicles. As with dealer plates, a maximum of two plates per identification number are issued.
A special vehicle registration document is completed for the vehicles by the registration authority if the requirements are met. When carrying out such journeys, the vehicle must comply with the provisions of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), but does not need to be registered and therefore does not require an operating licence. The vehicle is also not subject to regular vehicle monitoring. Before the vehicle licence is issued, an expert opinion in accordance with § 23 StVZO on the classic car status must be submitted, among other things. Red number plates for classic cars are issued on a personal basis.
A distinction must be made between this and the registration of an individual vehicle with a historic number plate. Such a vehicle must also have been put on the road for the first time at least 30 years ago, but in addition to the certificate in accordance with § 23 StVZO, it also requires an operating permit.
A vehicle licensed in this way also serves to preserve the motor vehicle cultural heritage, but has no restrictions with regard to the purpose for which it can be driven. The vehicle is also subject to regular vehicle inspection.
Motor vehicle tax amounts to 191.73 euros, for motorcycles 46.02 euros per year.
Registration fees for the allocation of the red number plate amount to a maximum of 205 euros as well as 10.20 euros for the vehicle registration booklet.
For the allocation of a classic car registration plate, the fees start at 27.00 euros (plus 10.20 euros for the optional registration plate fee, if applicable).
