With the decommissioning, the registration of the vehicle is terminated. The most common case is the sale of the vehicle. Until a new buyer is found, the vehicle tax and insurance is saved. Another main reason is the decommissioning of motorcycles, caravans and convertibles during the winter months.
The decommissioning can be carried out at any registration authority. Information about the registration authorities in Bavaria can be found under "Further links".
You can reserve your license plate for the purpose of re-registration (see "Related topics").
Vehicles can also be taken out of service via the Internet. The prerequisite for this is an electronic ID card with signature function and that the new unlockable security codes are already on the license plate and registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document).
These badges and the new vehicle registration certificate samples have been issued since January 1, 2015 for every registration process (where required).
If a vehicle of class M1, N1 or L5e is handed over to a recognized body for recovery, the previous keeper or owner must have this vehicle taken out of service without delay at the competent registration authority, presenting proof of recovery. The registration authority shall enter the data in the register and reissue the certificate of destruction after verification (Section 17 (1) sentences 1 and 2 FZV).
The registration certificate Part I and Part II must be handed over to the registration authority immediately after the recovery. The registration authority shall confiscate and destroy the registration certificate Part I and Part II.
The same applies if the vehicle is disposed of in another member state of the EU / EEA or in a third country.
