Weapons testing; implementation
As part of its sovereign duties, the Bavarian Proof Office carries out the inspection of firearms for civilian use. This is purely a safety check, in which each individual weapon is examined by the staff of the Beschussamt.
Description
Weapons must be checked for safety before they are used. The Weapons Act regulates the lawful possession and use of weapons in the public interest; the Proofing Act, on the other hand, regulates the proofing of handguns, firecrackers, insert barrels and essential parts of firearms in the interest of the safety of the user of the weapon.
The testing of handguns includes
- Preliminary testing,
- Proofing,
- post-testing and
- stamping.
During the preliminary inspection, it is determined whether the weapons are correctly marked, functionally safe and dimensionally accurate. A visual inspection is also performed. The durability test (proof) is performed with test ammunition whose gas pressure is 30 percent above the maximum permissible gas pressure for service ammunition. During the retest, it is determined whether any unacceptable changes in dimensions or defects have occurred during the firing. After passing the test, the firearms are stamped with the proof mark, the local mark of the Proof Office and the year mark.
