Motor vehicle license plates; application for an E license plate
With the E license plate you have the possibility to use specially marked parking spaces or to drive on streets that have been approved for this purpose. The vehicle must be a purely electric vehicle or meet special requirements as a hybrid vehicle.
Upon application, an E license plate will be issued for the following vehicles:
- Battery electric vehicle (BEV)
- Fuel cell vehicle (FCEV)
- Hybrid vehicle (PHEV)
Here, the following additional requirements must be met:
- CO2 emissions(WLTP) below 50 g/km or
- Range with electric drive 40 km (range city, EAER City).
Vehicles must be assigned to class M1, N1, L3e, L4e, L5e or L7e. Class N2 vehicles can be issued an E license plate if they can be driven in Germany with a class B driver's license up to a gross vehicle weight of 4,250 kg.
The E license plate bears the letter "E" after the identification number. It can also be assigned as a changeable license plate or as a seasonal license plate.
Evidence of compliance by means of an EC certificate of conformity or a manufacturer's data confirmation.

The costs of the respective registration process apply (see under "Related topics"). You can apply for the E license plate when registering a new vehicle and each time you change the registration of your vehicle.
If you want to provide your vehicle with an E-plate, costs of 27.50 to 31.20 euros are incurred.
There are additional fees for reserving and choosing a vanity plate.
You must obtain the license plates yourself at your own expense from private providers.
Internet-based allocation is not yet possible for an E license plate.
