Motor vehicle registration plates; application for replacement in the event of theft, loss or illegibility
If you have lost a license plate from your vehicle, had it stolen, or it is illegible, you will need to apply for a new license plate to be issued.
If you have lost one or both of your vehicle's number plates, they have been stolen or they are no longer legible, a new number plate must be issued. The stolen or lost number plate will not be issued again for at least 10 years and will be marked with a tracing notice.
This is the only way to prevent you from being charged if third parties use your old licence plates to commit administrative offences or criminal offences.
You may not operate your vehicle without licence plates.
