Study; Information for foreign students
Foreign students make extensive use of the opportunity to enroll at Bavarian universities.
Studying at a Bavarian university is attractive to a large number of foreign students: In recent years, an average of one in ten students at Bavarian universities was of foreign origin. In particular, the steadily increasing number of degree programs leading to "Bachelor's" and "Master's" degrees makes studying in Bavaria an attractive option for foreign students.
Particularly advantageous is the possibility of obtaining a so-called "double degree" at a Bavarian university. These double degree programs, which allow students to earn two degrees - from a foreign university and from a Bavarian university - are offered in numerous degree programs. For Bavarian and foreign students, obtaining such a double degree means an increase in their qualifications and thus in their opportunities on the international market.
Prerequisites for enrollment at a university in Bavaria include the following.
- The qualification required for the course of study (previous education certificates acquired abroad must be recognized as equivalent to the German university entrance qualification),
- proof of the language skills required for the course of study,
- admission by the desired university.
In principle, the application for admission must be sent directly to the university at which the student intends to study. An exception applies in this respect for certain state examination courses, insofar as admission is applied for for the 1st semester: Foreigners or stateless persons who are equivalent to Germans or have acquired a German university entrance qualification ("Bildungsinländer") must address their application for admission to the Foundation for University Admission. More detailed information can be found on the website of the Foundation for University Admission (for link, see "Further links").
As a rule, the required language skills should already have been acquired in the country of origin. Opportunities to attend German language courses are sometimes available at universities in the country of origin as well as at German cultural institutes and Goethe Institutes abroad.
