For AIDS patients and HIV-infected persons as well as for their relatives, partners and all persons who have questions on the subject, 10 psychosocial AIDS counseling centers and the AIDS help centers are available for information on HIV/AIDS in addition to the 76 state and municipal health offices. With at least one psychosocial AIDS counseling center in each administrative district, Bavaria has established a nationwide, specialized education and counseling service. The counseling centers, public health offices, and AIDS help centers provide counseling by telephone and in person and hold educational events about HIV/AIDS. In addition, the health offices offer free, anonymous HIV antibody tests as needed.
The counseling and support is intended to help those directly or indirectly affected by HIV not to be left alone with their fate and to strengthen their motivation to act in a health-conscious and responsible manner.
From the age of 16, insured persons of the statutory health insurance with a substantial risk of HIV infection have a right to medical consultation, necessary examinations and, after consultation, also to the supply of prescription drugs for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Adults pay the statutory co-payment for the drugs.
