Purpose and subject matter
Training assistance is provided for studies in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Training Assistance Act (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz, BAföG).
Training assistance is only provided if the student, his/her spouse and parents are not able to raise the necessary costs for training and living expenses on the basis of their own income and assets. In certain cases (e.g. many years of professional activity), support is granted without taking parental income into account.
Beneficiaries
In principle, participants in full-time training courses are eligible to apply. Further criteria can be found under "Requirements".
Type and amount
The maximum rate of the educational grant depends on the type of accommodation. As a rule, half of the funding is provided as a grant and half as a non-interest-bearing state loan.
The maximum monthly subsidy rate is 480 euros for students attending higher technical colleges, academies and universities (781 euros if students no longer live with their parents).
If trainees themselves have health and nursing care insurance that is subject to contributions, the requirement is increased by 122 euros per month.
Responsible office
For students at universities, the offices for educational support belonging to the student union of the respective university are responsible for domestic education in Bavaria. The contact details of the responsible student services office are displayed when you select the city where the university is located under "My city" in the BayernPortal.
