Patent attorney; application for admission
The activity under the German designation "Patentanwalt" requires a license according to §§ 5 - 29 Patentanwaltsordnung (PAO).
Description
The application shall be addressed to the Chamber of Patent Attorneys. The Chamber of Patent Attorneys is a federal corporation under public law, which is supervised by the President of the German Patent and Trademark Office.
Admission to the patent attorney profession shall become effective upon delivery of a certificate issued by the Chamber of Patent Attorneys (Sec. 18 (1) PAO). The certificate may not be issued until the applicant has been sworn in and has provided proof that professional liability insurance has been taken out or has submitted a provisional confirmation of coverage (Sec. 18 (2) PAO).
Upon admission, the patent attorney becomes a member of the Chamber of Patent Attorneys and may practice under the professional title of "patent attorney" (Sec. 18 (3) and (4) PAO).
Prerequisites
The prerequisite for admission to the patent attorney profession is, in particular, the acquisition of the technical qualification (Sec. 6 PAO),proof of the required legal knowledge in an examination (Sec. 8 PAO) and at least six months of employment with a patent attorney (Sec. 5 (2) PAO) or a certificate according to Sec. 2 (5) EuPAG that an equivalent professional qualification exists.

Certified copy of the patent assessor's certificate and proof of academic degrees and titles, if applicable.
(If the academic degree or title is included on the patent assessor's certificate, a copy of the degrees is sufficient. If you have acquired academic degrees and titles only after the patent assessor's certificate has been issued, you are requested to submit a certified copy of the degrees).

Proof of professional liability insurance
(During the period of admission as a patent attorney, professional liability insurance must be maintained without interruption with an insurance company authorised to do business in Germany. The minimum insurance sum is 250,000 euros for the individual case of damage. The benefits of the insurer for all damages caused within one insurance year may be limited to four times the minimum insurance sum (Section 45 PAO)).

employment contract and declaration of exemption, if applicable
(If you are in a permanent employment relationship with a company, a copy of the employment contract must be submitted as well as a signed original declaration of the employer, bearing the company stamp, that there are no obstacles to the practice of the profession of patent attorney. Please use the template provided by the Board of the Chamber of Patent Attorneys. You can obtain the template from the office. The documents serve to determine whether there is a ground for refusal within the meaning of Section 14 no. 8 PAO).
