Nature parks; declaration

Nature parks are usually initiated by counties and municipalities. In Bavaria, the areas are declared nature parks by the highest nature conservation authority.

Description

Nature parks are characterized by large-scale natural and cultural landscapes, in which the protection and preservation of biotope and species diversity with the interests of environmentally compatible forms of recreation is aimed for. They are large-scale areas of usually at least 20,000 hectares in size that correspond to the natural structure and are predominantly designated as landscape or nature conservation areas. They are suitable for nature and environmentally compatible forms of recreation. The aim is to achieve land use that is permanently compatible with nature and the environment. In doing so, diverse habitats are to be preserved or promoted through suitable forms of use. Nature parks are to be planned, structured, developed and further developed in compliance with nature conservation objectives.

The Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection is responsible for the declaration as a nature park.
