School transport; application for reimbursement of school transport costs

The necessary transport of pupils on their way to school is organised and financed by the authorities responsible for school transport.


The necessary transport of pupils of public elementary

  • public primary, secondary and special schools
  • public or state-recognised private secondary schools, grammar schools, vocational schools (excluding part-time vocational schools), two-tier business schools and three- or four-tier business schools up to and including year 10
  • public or state-recognized vocational schools with full-time instruction
  • public or state-recognised secondary modern schools, grammar schools, vocational schools, vocational colleges - excluding part-time vocational colleges -, business schools, technical colleges and vocational colleges which are dependent on transport because of a permanent disability,

is to be ensured by the responsible authority. In the case of public primary, secondary and special schools, the responsible body is the school authority, otherwise it is the administrative districts and independent towns in which the pupil has his or her usual place of residence.

Necessary is the transport to the regularly held compulsory and elective lessons of the nearest school, if the way to school is longer than 2 km for pupils of grades 1 to 4 and longer than 3 km for pupils of grade 5 and higher. In the case of compulsory schools, the nearest school is regularly the Sprengelschule; in the case of other schools, the school of the chosen type of school, training and subject area which can be reached with the lowest transport costs.

Exceptions: Pupils who are dependent on transport because of a permanent disability are transported free of charge, irrespective of the distance. Likewise, if the distance to school is less than these kilometre limits, transport can be provided if the route to school is particularly arduous or particularly dangerous, as verified by the responsible body.

Pupils from grade 11 onwards of public and state-recognised private

  • grammar schools
  • vocational schools (without part-time vocational schools)
  • Business schools
  • Technical secondary schools
  • Berufsoberschulen
  • Part-time vocational schools

are not entitled to transport, but are entitled to reimbursement of school travel costs that exceed a personal contribution of 465.00 euros per family and school year.

For families with a child benefit entitlement for three or more children and families with a claim to help towards living costs or to unemployment benefit II or social welfare benefit, the necessary travel costs are reimbursed in full.
