Residence permit; application for an electronic residence permit

On application, the residence permit issued in the form of a sticker in the passport may be replaced by an electronic residence permit.

The residence permit, the settlement permit, the permit for permanent residence EU and the Blue Card EU as well as the residence card and the permanent residence card have generally been issued as electronic residence titles (eAT) since 1 September 2011. The residence permit for Swiss nationals and their family members is issued as an electronic residence title upon application.

If there is a legitimate interest, the residence title issued in the form of a sticker in the passport can be replaced by an electronic residence title (eAT) upon application to the competent foreigners authority. The previous residence titles in passports and passport replacement papers remain valid until 31.08.2021 at the latest.

The electronic residence permit is a plastic card in cheque card format. It has a contactless chip inside the card on which personal data, biometric features (photograph and two fingerprints) and, if applicable, ancillary provisions (conditions) are stored. In addition, the chip contains the option of using an electronic proof of identity and a qualified electronic signature.

For persons with impaired vision, Braille stickers with the inscription "ad" (identity document) can be affixed to the back of the eAT since September 2021 to make it easier for those affected to distinguish it from other cards in cheque card format (see "Further links").

Detailed information on the electronic use of the card (e.g. online ID function, signature function) can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (see "Further links").

    • Costs for issuing/renewing the respective residence title: see under "Related topics".
    • Re-issuance of the electronic residence permit (e.g. when obtaining a new passport): 67 euros
